Vestas identifies cause for V112 wind turbine fire

Vestas says a loose connection in the electrical system started the fire in the V112 3 MW wind turbine at the Gross Eilstorf wind farm in Germany on 30 March.

The fire started in the harmonic filter cabinet due to a loose connection in the electrical system, which created an arc flash.

Vestas says the issue is being addressed by using a different type of washer on the the electrical connections in the wind turbine's harmonic filter cabinet.

V112 customers have been informed, and Vestas is already in the process of replacing washers at the same time as performing other planned upgrades and maintenance of the wind turbines.

The burnt nacelle has already been replaced, and is scheduled to be re-commissioned this week.

Vestas still is awaiting the reports from two external experts who worked side-by-side with Vestas investigators. The these reports are expected within a few weeks, and Vestas says it is confident that this final conclusion will be confirmed.
