Verogy Solar uses 3 different mounting structures on retirement community PV project

Renewables developer Verogy Solar has energized its newly-constructed three-part solar energy project at retirement community Essex Meadows in Essex, Connecticut. The 587-kW solar project is expected to produce nearly 700,000 kWh of clean energy every year.

The is made of solar components installed in three locations at Essex Meadows: a rooftop system, ground-mounted panels and a one-of-a-kind wooden beam carport system. Built to blend in with the picturesque Essex landscape, the wooden beams of the carport resemble a classic carriage house — with the solar panels atop and EV charging stations below providing a modern twist.

The solar project is the latest example of Essex Meadows’ commitment to sustainability which includes high-efficiency geothermal heating and cooling, irrigation using non-potable water and a comprehensive recycling program.

“Essex Meadows has a long history of embracing environmental innovation,” said William Herchel, CEO of Verogy. “We were pleased to have the opportunity to bring clean energy to this great community and its residents.”

Verogy presented the project on June 10 to the members of the Essex Meadows Green Committee, as well as residents and staff, outlining the environmental, financial and community benefits that the solar array will create.

“We are so happy to have found a solar energy solution that compliments the beauty of our grounds. Working with Verogy has proved to be a win-win,” said Jennifer Rannestad, executive director of Essex Meadows.

The solar arrays are owned by Essex Meadows and the community will receive all ZREC (Zero Emission Renewable Energy Credit) benefits as well as the utility savings the panels generate. Over the 35-year lifetime of the systems, Essex Meadows can expect to see a net cumulative benefit of over $4 million.
