U.K. Renewable-Energy Certificates Rise to Record at Auction

U.K. Renewables Obligation Certificates, used by power retailers to prove the origin of electricity supplies, rose to a record in a quarterly auction held July 8.

The average price gained 3.7 percent from the previous quarter to 53.27 pounds ($105) a certificate, the Non-Fossil Purchasing Agency Ltd. said in an e-mailed statement. It sold more than 143,000 certificates, it said.

Under the 2002 program, U.K. power companies are obliged to supply an increasing portion of electricity from renewable sources such as wind and energy crops. A Renewables Obligation Certificate is equivalent to 1 megawatt-hour of power produced from renewables.
