IAEA experts conclude checkup of nuclear facility in Japan's quake-hit area

A team of experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) concluded on Thursday their four-day checkup of a nuclear power plant in central Japan's quake-hit Niigata Prefecture, according to local media.

The six-member delegation is scheduled to present the results of its examination of the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power station to plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. and Japanese nuclear regulators on Friday, Kyodo News reported.

The experts will also exchange ideas with officials from the Japanese Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry on the same day, and report to IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei sometime next week.

The delegation, which arrived in Japan after the July 16 magnitude 6.8 earthquake led to the leakage of a small amount of radiation, looked inside all seven reactor buildings and had detailed discussion with the operator, Japanese media said, quoting team leader Philippe Jamet.

The six experts will leave Japan on Friday.
