Hawaii’s largest ‘solar-plus-battery’ farm unveiled in West Oahu

A new West Oahu solar farm that would provide a new source of electricity to consumers — even after the sun goes down — was unveiled Thursday.

The “Kupono Solar Project” is the first solar-plus-battery storage project in Ewa — and the largest on Oahu.

Its goal is to provide clean, renewable energy for 10,000 homes and cut more than 50,000 tons of CO2 emissions.

The project is part of the state’s 2045 “100% clean energy” goal.

“This project represents a huge leap forward for the grid and our collective community-wide commitments to clean and affordable renewable energy and energy efficiency,” said Andrew Sugg, Chief of Staff for the Office of the Mayor.

Kupono Solar sits on 131 acres of land in West Loch, Ewa.

When the project broke ground in October 2022, 500,000 honeybees were re-located from the site to a farm on the North Shore.

Jars with their honey were handed out at Thursday’s dedication ceremony.
