Scientists in West Wales and the Valleys looking to develop biofuels from locally grown plant crops have been given a funding boost of £20 million from the Welsh Assembly.
Aberystwyth University's Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Science will work with partners at Bangor and Swansea Universities as part of the BEACON initiative to develop biofuels that can be used for green transport in the future.
Researchers will work with companies to convert crops into fuels and will add to the work done by Aberystwyth University to produce fuels from energy crops like high sugar rye grass.
Already the European Regional Development Fund has provided £10.6 million to the project.
Deputy first minister and minister for the economy and transport Ieuan Wyn Jones, commented: "We are committed to building upon the expertise within our universities and industry to develop new technologies and products which will increase our competitiveness and position Wales on a global platform."
