Syria plans to solicit bids next year for four projects for generating solar and wind power, Minister of Electricity Imad Khamis said.
The Arab country will also add 2,700 megawatts of output, equal to 40 percent of current production capacity, after completing projects now under construction, Khamis said, according to the official Syrian Arab News Agency. The Electricity Ministry plans to spend 361 billion pounds ($7.61 billion) in 2011-2015 on new facilities for generating and distributing power, he said in the report today.
Syria's annual electricity demand is growing by 5 percent to 7 percent, meaning that the nation needs to add 700 megawatts a year at a cost of 700 million euros ($1 billion), Khamis said.
