South Korea to Work With Jordan on Nuclear Power Plant

Officials from South Korea and Jordan are scheduled to meet

Saturday to go over details of an agreement for Seoul to build a

nuclear power plant in the Middle Eastern country, the Xinhua News

Agency reported (see GSN, July 28, 2009).

South Korean Deputy Foreign Minister Lee Yong-joon is expected to

travel to Jordan for the nuclear construction discussions. Seoul

was chosen by Amman last month to build the research reactor

(Xinhua News Agency, Jan. 7).

Meanwhile, a South Korean-led conglomerate last month received a

$20.4 billion contract to construct four nuclear reactors in the

United Arab Emirates, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The nuclear project is the biggest-to-date energy deal to come to

the region, UAE officials said. Korea Electric Power Corp. is

leading the project with assistance from Samsung, Hyundai and

Westinghouse (Margaret Coker, Wall Street Journal, Dec. 27, 2009).
