Solar panels at new South Norwalk School will power building, act as ‘hedge against inflation’

Powering the new South Norwalk Elementary School fully with solar panels would serve as a protection against inflation and rising utility rates, according to an expert — while mitigating an expense to the city in the future.

At a July 5 meeting of the Planning and Zoning Commission, there was a discussion on the potential for ground-mounted solar panels in addition to the planned rooftop panels at the school to be built at 1 Meadow St. Ext. as the newest building in the Norwalk Public Schools; this combination aims to power the school fully by solar energy.

Consulting Engineering Services is working with the city to develop a solar strategy for the school, and George Keithan, the company’s founder and principal, spoke broadly at the meeting about renewable energy capabilities in the city and the benefits.
