Solar electricity system installed in Lok Sabha

Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar on Tuesday inaugurated a solar energy system in Parliament as part of the drive to turn the Parliament House into a green building. In December 2009, she had requested minister for new and renewable energy Farooq Abdullah to install a solar lighting system in Parliament. The system has been installed at a cost of Rs 2.41 crore.

"A solar energy system operational within the precincts of the highest legislative body of the country, Parliament complex has shown the way to a green and environmentally-conscious India," she said.

Kumar also said that a water harvesting system has been operational for years and they were planning to have a kitchen waste-dependent bio-gas plant. Also, there is a move to ban plastic in the Parliament House complex.
