Renewables set to grow in Colombia

Colombia, which has the second largest population in South America, is well positioned to prosper from its huge wealth of natural energy resources, enabling it to meet rising energy demands.

Wind energy, for example, is gaining traction in the country. According to Columbia's Unit for Mining and Energy Planning, part of the Ministry of Mines and Energy, wind power now produces approximately 18 MW while biomass contributes around 35 MW.

"Although their contribution is still [relatively] small, alternative sources of energy are gaining more relevance in the Colombian energy market and this is a trend in line with the rest of the world's markets," said Antonio Celia, president of Promigas, a major natural gas distributor.
