Foxconn invests in solar energy green houses in China

Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) plans to cooperate with the local government in China's Guangxi autonomous region to develop solar power applications for agricultural purposes, according to a report in the Taiwan-based United Daily News (UDN). The project will focus on constructing thin-film solar power green houses to strengthen agriculture development and provide electricity. Thin-film solar products have lower production costs and can be used on glass-type materials. Hence Foxconn plans to adopt thin-film products to build solar energy green houses, according to the Chinese-language report.

The solar energy green houses can also be used as stand-alone solar power generation stations and connect to the electricity grid of the region, said paper. But Foxconn denied reports from China-based media which said firm planned to invest more than CNY10 billion (US$1.6 billion) in constructing 20 solar power-generation plants and five solar equipment firms in China.

Foxconn noted that none of these projects exist and the firm has no plan to invest heavily in the solar industry, said the UDN report.
