On October 17, at the China-EU new energy technology innovation cooperation and investment forum, Wang Weimin, chief engineer of Dongfang Steam Turbine Co., Ltd., said that the growth rate of China's wind power had reached over 100 percent for three consecutive years.
In 2008, installed wind power capacity in China increased over 6 million kWh, two times more than 2007’s. China's total wind power capacity totals over 12 million kWh, taking up by one tenth of the world's total capacity, ranking the fourth in the world.
Wang noted that wind power, as a kind of renewable energy, will enjoy faster development China. If China’s wind power can maintain the annual growth rate of 7 million to 8 million kWh, the total installed capacity of wind power will reach 100 million kWh by 2010, equivalent to the one eighth of China’s current total installed capacity.
At present, more than 40 countries make use of wind power, among them, 13 countries' wind power installed capacity exceeds 1 million kWh. Since 2001, the installed wind power capacity of the world has been growing at the rate of 20 to 30 percent annually and reached120 million kWh by the end of 2008.
According to the third census of wind power resources in China, the total developable volume of China's wind power was between 700 million and 1.2 billion kWh. Among them, 600 million to 1 billion kWh can be exploited on land, and 100 million to 200 million can be developed offshore.
