Tokyo Electric to Build 2 Solar Power Plants in Kawasaki City

Tokyo Electric Power Co., Japan's biggest generator, will join with Kawasaki City to build two solar power plants in the city's bay area to increase capacity for renewable energy.

The plants, due to be completed by the year ending March 2012, will have total capacity of 20 megawatts, the company said in a statement in Tokyo today. The statement didn't disclose costs.

The move follows similar announcements by companies such as Kansai Electric Power Co. after the government urged utilities to expand renewable energy capacity to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. Japan's power utilities aim to boost solar capacity to 140 megawatts by the year ending March 2021 from about 4.25 megawatts now.

In September, Tokyo Electric announced it would install solar panels at a cargo terminal of Haneda airport near Tokyo, together with Mitsui & Co.

Kawasaki City is located in Kanagawa Prefecture next to Tokyo.
