[International Energy Network Live Report] On December 9, a side event entitled “Off-grid Solar Energy Empowers Land and People in Desert Areas” was held at the “China Pavilion of the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) (COP16) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The side meeting was hosted by The Research Center for Energy Transition and Social Development, School of Social Sciences, Tsinghua University and co-hosted by Hangzhou Photovoltaic Association. The conference aims to provide the most convenient living and production energy for people in desert areas by showing China’s off-grid solar products to the conference, and help achieve the SDG goals.
During the side meeting, Cao Yongjie, General Manager of Genergy Technology Co.,Ltd, delivered a speech on the topic of “Application of Modular Prefabricated Cabin in Adverse Environment”, introducing the challenges and needs of energy in desert areas and the core technologies and advantages of direct and flexible solar storage cabins from five aspects.

“Photovoltaic sand control” Facing Three Major Challenges
According to data, the current global desertified land area has reached 36 million square kilometers, accounting for 1/4 of the entire land area, affecting 1.5 billion people in more than 110 countries and regions, causing direct economic losses of more than 42 billion US dollars each year, and desertification control is imminent. “Photovoltaic sand control” combines the two functions of ecological restoration and photovoltaic power generation to achieve a win-win situation of increasing green, increasing energy, and increasing income. Therefore, “photovoltaic + sand control” has become an important measure to control desertification. However, Cao Yongjie believes that “photovoltaic sand control” still faces three major challenges:
First, the temperature difference between day and night in desert areas is extremely large. During the day, under direct sunlight, the temperature of photovoltaic modules may quickly rise to 60-80 degrees Celsius. This high temperature will reduce the conversion efficiency of photovoltaic cells because the performance of photovoltaic cells will decay with the increase in temperature. The temperature will drop sharply at night, which may cause mechanical stress in the components and connecting parts due to thermal expansion and contraction. Repeated temperature changes may cause cracking and loosening of the packaging materials and connecting lines of the components, thereby increasing the risk of failure.
Second, sandstorms and dust will significantly shorten the life of buildings. The sand and dust particles in the sandstorm have a certain hardness, and when moving at high speed, they will have an abrasive effect on the surface of the building. For the glass curtain wall of the building, the long-term scouring of sand and dust will cause scratches on the glass surface, reducing its transparency and aesthetics. If the scratches are deep, it may also affect the strength of the glass and increase the risk of breakage. In general, after multiple sandstorm attacks, the light transmittance of the glass curtain wall may decrease by 10-15%.
Third, the power system or off-grid power system is unstable due to continuous consumption. The power system or off-grid power system may cause the transmission line to be overloaded due to continuous high consumption. Overload of the transmission line will cause the line to heat up and increase power loss. At the same time, long-term overload operation may damage the insulation layer of the transmission line and cause line failure. For example, when the current of a transmission line exceeds 1.2 times its rated current, the aging rate of the insulation layer will accelerate, and the probability of line failure will increase by 30-50%.
“In response to the above challenges, the prefabricated solar storage and direct flexible cabin developed by Genergy Technology provides a digital solution for global desertification control. The prefabricated cabin integrates photovoltaics, energy storage, distribution cabinets, DC air conditioners, AC/DC hybrid systems, and transformers. The internal layout has been carefully designed, taking into account the size and operating requirements of the equipment to maximize the use of space. Through modular design, various equipment are systematically arranged for easy maintenance and operation. Sufficient expandable space is reserved for future equipment upgrades and capacity expansion.” Cao Yongjie said.
Genergy Solar Storage Modular Prefabricated Cabin Has Five Major Advantages
Genergy Technology is a one-stop EMCO energy service provider integrating design consulting (E), manufacturing (M), construction (C), and digital operation and maintenance (O). It has an efficient digital plant, high-quality of services provided by on-site engineer and scenario-based, landing industry R&D capabilities.
According to Cao Yongjie, Genergy Technology has actively participated in global desertification control with its outstanding technical strength and innovative achievements in the field of new energy, and is committed to providing customers with safer, more efficient and greener energy services in recent years.
For global desertification control, the prefabricated solar storage direct and flexible cabin independently developed by Genergy Technology is not only economical and efficient, but also can withstand a service life of 20 to 30 years. In addition, the prefabricated cabin also has the characteristics of intelligence and flexibility, providing reliable solutions for energy supply and infrastructure construction in desert areas.
In terms of cost efficiency, the Genergy solar storage direct and flexible prefabricated cabin adopts a standardized design method, combined with factory-based processing and assembly construction methods, which significantly reduces the overall investment and saves more than 8% of on-site construction costs. And with standardized design approach, combined with factorybased processing and assembly construction approach, delivers a significant reduction in overall investment, saving more than 8% on site construction costs. With advanced integrated technologies and modular layouts, we can conserve land resources by 30% to 50%.
In terms of performance, thanks to digital and brand hardware solutions, Genergy Technology provides long-term maintenance-free and on-duty personnel-free systems to ensure reliable performance. Supported by 6 layer anti-corrosion technology and advanced insulation, the box itself is designed to functional over 30 years. The overall protection level of the prefabricated cabin is not less than IP56, with maximum dust-proof, moisture-proof and anti-condensation effects. The cabin frame is made of high-strength steel and composite materials to ensure the stability of the cabin during transportation or in harsh environments. The internal equipment will also not be affected. The cabin also has excellent earthquake and wind resistance.
In terms of intelligence, the prefabricated cabin is pre-installed with the IXMS intelligent energy management system, which not only realizes the digital measurement, analysis and control of energy flow, but also integrates the photovoltaic system to create a flexible AC/DC hybrid system to meet the energy needs of the cabin itself. At the same time, the prefabricated cabin combines micro-positive pressure technology, insulation technology and HVAC system by utilizing the edge computing control system to maintain a constant temperature, constant humidity and low dust environment, significantly improving the service life of the equipment.
In terms of flexibility, the modular physical structure of the Genergy Solar Storage Direct Flexible Prefabricated Cabin allows for a building-block assembly approach, adaptable to various on-site conditions. According to requirements, the prefabricated cabin can achieve the safe, efficient, stable and rapid relocation of substations (or distribution rooms) to different locations within a short period.
In terms of installation speed, the prefabricated modules of the Genergy Solar Storage Direct Flexible Cabin can be manufactured within 2 to 3 months and deployed on-site within 1 month, ensuring a swift transition to power supply.
Finally, Cao Yongjie said that in the future, Genergy Technology will continue to work with global partners to jointly promote the widespread application of green energy technology around the world and help the global desertification control.
