Offshore wind farm planned for New England waters

Neptune Wind intends to develop, construct and operate a 500 MW capacity offshore wind farm 20 miles off of the Massachusetts and Rhode Island border. A federal permit could come by 2013 and construction would take five additional years.

The U.S. Department of the Interior made a Call for Information and Nominations for development in the area. Neptune Wind said it will submit a nomination for Nomans Wind's proposed lease area by the October 3 deadline. Neptune Wind submitted a nomination for a project in federal waters off the coast of New Jersey earlier in 2011.

The latest project would use 80 to 100 wind turbines. The company plans to use a new portside facility in New Bedford, Mass. for some manufacturing and construction operations, but is also exploring port and other facilities in Rhode Island.
