Pattern agrees 870 MW wind energy deal in Ontario

Pattern Energy Group and Samsung Renewable Energy have signed four separate power purchase agreements (PPAs) with Ontario Power Authority (OPA). These agreements will provide 870 MW of clean energy from wind energy projects to OPA, enough to power more than 300,000 homes every year.

Pattern and Samsung are making progress on their wind energy projects in Ontario, including South Kent Wind, a 270 MW project under development in Chatham-Kent, Ontario, and 150 MW of wind from the Grand Renewable Energy Park, under development in Haldimand County, Ontario.

In addition, Pattern and Samsung have signed agreements to acquire and develop two projects totalling 450 MW. These four projects comprise the portfolio of 870 MW in the power purchase agreements.

Mike Garland, CEO of Pattern Energy, says: "These agreements represent a historic commitment to creating jobs, building factories and installing wind power projects in the province of Ontario. Pattern, Samsung and the government have invested a significant amount of time, as well as tens of millions of dollars in the development of these projects.

Cheol-Woo Lee, Senior Executive Vice President of Samsung C&T Corporation, says: "Together with our partners, Samsung is making an unprecedented $7 billion private sector investment in Ontario. This investment will create the world's largest cluster of wind and solar power, putting Ontario on the global renewable energy map. Today's announcement is a major milestone for our project and the signed power purchase agreements allow us to move forward confidently to create real jobs and real clean energy in Ontario, for generations to come."

The Green Energy Investment Agreement with the Government of Ontario commits Samsung and its partners to bringing $7 billion in investment to Ontario to create new manufacturing jobs and capacity and generate 2,500 MW of renewable energy.

As part of the agreement with the province, Samsung and its partners are establishing four manufacturing facilities in Ontario, creating 1,440 manufacturing and related jobs building wind and solar technology for use in Ontario and export across North America.
