Kauai County says it's installing solar panels at the Lihue Civic Center to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, save money, and become energy self-sufficient.
The county said Friday it has awarded Solar Engineering and Contracting a $379,000 contract to install a photovoltaic system on the roof of the center's Piikoi Building.
The solar power generated is expected to save the county more than $40,000 a year. It's also forecast to prevent more than 165,000 pounds of carbon dioxide from polluting the air each year.
The county is also installing solar power panels at Kaiakea fire station and the Waimea wastewater treatment plant.
