Chinese photovoltaic manufacturer to open new laboratory

A leading manufacturer of the photovoltaic products used to create solar panels will be establishing a new laboratory to further its research on solar energy-related products.

China-based manufacturer Trina Solar Limited announced on Tuesday that it had received the necessary documents from China's Ministry of Science and Technology to begin the establishment of the State Key Laboratory in the Changzhou Trina PV Industrial Park.

While specific commercial terms of the structure have not yet been finalized, the lab will be used to develop new photovoltaic-related materials, such as cell and module technologies as well as performance tests that could improve the technology used in solar panels.

"We are excited to announce the establishment this world class national laboratory in the Changzhou Trina PV Industrial Park," said Mr. Jifan Gao, Trina Solar's Chairman and CEO. "The laboratory will advance technological innovations to support the burgeoning industry as well as accelerate Trina Solar's R&D, technology transfer and new product development goals to enhance the Company's high quality product offerings."

The announcement by Trina came only days after the manufacturer stated that it had made the initial shipments of photovoltaic materials to Australia's RFI Industries Pty Ltd., the nation's leading renewable energy distributor.

The materials will be used to help RFI accomplish a goal set for 2010 of supplying up to 10 megawatts of power using photovoltaic modules.
