Westar Energy has acquired rights to develop a new wind energy farm in the state, the Topeka-based utility said today.
The company said it has reached an agreement with Infinity Wind Power to develop a site near Spearville for up to 500 megawatts of wind energy.
The first phase of the project will be to develop 200 megawatts from the farm by late 2011 or 2012.
The company owns two wind farms — 99 megawatt Central Plains Wind Farm near Leoti and a 100 megawatt share of Flat Ridge Wind Farm near Nashville — and purchases 96 megawatts from the Meridian Way Wind Farm near Concordia.
