The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) assured assistance in establishing a nuclear power plant in Bangladesh for generating electricity following an appeal from Dhaka, UNB news agency reported Monday.
The assurance came when Adviser for Science and ICT Tapan Chowdhury met with Deputy Director General and Head of Nuclear Energy of the IAEA Yuri Sokolov in Vienna Monday.
During the meeting, Tapan Chowdhury asked for IAEA help in formulating an action plan for the proposed nuclear power plant project, Rooppur Power Plant in western Pabna district, 125 km southwest of capital Dhaka.
The IAEA was also asked to provide support for preparatory works and technical support for building the plant.
Yuri Sokolov appreciated the role of Bangladesh in campaigning for the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
He was impressed with the steps taken by Bangladesh in ensuring nuclear safety standards and assured IAEA assistance in the efforts to set up nuclear power plant for generating electricity.
Tapan Chowdhury is in Vienna leading the Bangladesh delegation to the 51st General Conference of IAEA, an organization responsible for peaceful use of nuclear energy.
