Spanish royal visit to China an opportunity to boost ties

Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos said on Wednesday the state visit by Spain's king and queen to China on June 24-29 is "an excellent opportunity" to boost Spain-China relations.

Speaking to lawmakers in the Senate, the upper house of parliament, he said that during the one-week visit to China by the royal couple, a host of festivities will be held and cooperation agreements will be signed.

There will be new initiatives like establishing a Spanish-Chinese renewable energy center and signing an agreement on opening a subsidiary of Spain's national cultural body, the Cervantes Institute, at Shanghai University, he said.

Spanish telecommunications firm Telefonica is expected to sign an agreement with Chinese company Netcom, he added.

The royal couple will open an exhibition of paintings from Spain's Del Prado Museum.

Moratinos also said a series agreements had been signed with China, including the Strategic Association Agreement and the Integral Market Development Plan. This year marks the Year of Spain in China.
