The 16th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) (COP16) is taking place in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, which has received widespread attention from international. The China Pavilion has attracted many technical and scientific researchers of desertification control from all over the world to explore and exchange. Representatives from the UNCCD Secretariat, the International Center for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF), the Ministry of International Cooperation of UNCCD and Partnership Division, the World Bank Group and the Global Environment Facility, Mongolia, South Korea, Argentina and other countries shared their successful experiences in ecological governance in the China Pavilion.

Mr. Liu Bing of the China Three-North Bureau introduced Ms. Niu Yuqin, a model of desertification control in China

Researcher Lu Qi of the Three-North Institute introduced the vision of Three-North Shelter Forest Program

Mr. Lin Zhanhui introduced the application scenarios of Juncao

Experts discuss the path to curb land degradation

Youth, intelligence, and land help desertification control

Rapid development of Saudi Arabia and increasing livestock grazing have led to severe land degradation, and the land desertification control is imminent. In March 2021, Saudi Arabia launched a green initiative aiming to converting 30% of Saudi Arabia’s land into nature reserves, planting 10 billion trees, and restoring 40 million hectares of degraded land. The short-term goal is to plant 400 million trees by 2030.

Saudi official introduced the National Greening Program

Saudi Arabia’s tree growing vision

In response to Saudi Arabia’s National Greening Program, the School of Social Sciences of Tsinghua University, in collaboration with International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), National Center for Vegetation Cover and Combating Desertification (NCVC) and other institutions, held a “Energy-Water-Soil-Vegetation Solutions” special exhibition for nature reserves/ecological demonstration areas at the side meeting area of China Pavilion from 9:00 to 12:00 on December 7. It provides Saudi Arabia and other arid countries with solar empowerment in land and human – a comprehensive solution for water, food and ecosystem restoration from poverty to prosperity. Solar empowerment in land and human, REPER project department is in action.
IUCN: The International Union for Conservation of Nature, referred to as IUCN, is the world’s largest and oldest global non-profit environmental protection organization, and it is also an international organization in the field of natural environment protection and sustainable development that serves as a permanent observer of the United Nations General Assembly. It was established in Fontainebleau, France in 1948 and is headquartered in Gland, Switzerland. It is also known as the “International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources”.
NCVC: Saudi Arabia’s National Center for Vegetation Cover and Combating Desertification (NCVC) is an institution established by the Saudi government in 2019 to promote the restoration and sustainable development of ecosystems. The center’s main tasks include managing and protecting pastures, forests and national parks to maintain ecological balance and prevent desertification. Its tasks cover the regeneration of vegetation cover, the management of vegetation resources and the formulation of environmental standards.
REPER Project Department: School of Social Sciences of Tsinghua University-Renewable Energy Promotes Ecosystem Restoration of United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification Project, established in 2019, aims to carrying out scientific research on solar empowering in land and human, such as solar, land and ecology.
