Germany has become the world’s number one producer of solar energy, generating an impressive 22 gigawatt/hour of electricity before and after noon on May 25 and 26.
This equals the amount of electricity produced in the same amount of time by 20 nuclear power stations working at full capacity.
Renewable sources of energy currently account for a hefty 20 percent of the country’s electricity needs.
The German government decided to give up on nuclear power generation in the wake of last year’s accident at Japan’s Fukushima-1 station.
